Consulates general are full consular offices. They usually handle passports, visas, notarial services and help for their citizens in southern Vietnam.

When you may need your consulate

  • Lost or stolen passport: report it to the police, then contact your consulate for a replacement or emergency travel document.

Your consulate cannot extend your Vietnam visa. For that you need a new Vietnam e-visa, often combined with a visa run to Moc Bai.

Is there a US Embassy in Ho Chi Minh City?

What is the difference between a consulate general and an honorary consulate?

A consulate general is a full government office that handles passports, visas and citizen services. An honorary consul offers limited services and usually refers passport and visa matters to the embassy.

Can my consulate extend my Vietnam visa?

No. Only Vietnamese immigration can grant a new visa or stay. Most foreigners in Ho Chi Minh City get a new e-visa and re-enter Vietnam through a visa run.

Why do consulate addresses show new ward names?

Ho Chi Minh City merged its wards and abolished districts on 1 July 2025. Many addresses in District 1 are now in Sai Gon, Ben Thanh or Tan Dinh Ward.
