Ward names changed in 2025: read this first
On 1 July 2025, Ho Chi Minh City reorganised its local government. Districts were abolished and wards were merged, so the city now has 168 ward-level units (113 wards, 54 communes and one special zone). An address like “Ward 1, District 3” now belongs to a new, larger ward, in this case Ban Co Ward.
That is why the table below shows each ward under its former district. If you know which district you live in, start there.

Does a foreigner need to go to the ward police?
Usually, no. Under Vietnam’s immigration law, foreigners declare their temporary residence through the person who manages their accommodation. That person sends the declaration to the ward police, either online or on paper, within 12 hours of your arrival.
This applies to hotels and serviced apartments, and also to rented apartments, homestays and private homes. If you are staying with a friend, your friend or their landlord should declare your stay.
You may need to visit the ward police in person if there is a problem with your registration, your visa status or your accommodation details. In that case your landlord or host should usually come with you, because they are the one who made the declaration.
How temporary residence registration works
- STEP 1
You check in
Give your host your passport and visa, e-visa or residence card, and tell them how long you will stay.
- STEP 2
Your host declares you
Within 12 hours, your host declares your stay to the ward police, online or on a paper form.
- STEP 3
Keep the confirmation
Ask for a copy of the confirmation. A stamped original is often needed for a TRC, work permit or criminal record check.
When you will need the stamped confirmation
The original temporary residence confirmation, with the red stamp of the ward police, is often requested for:
- a temporary residence card (TRC);
- a work permit;
- a Vietnam Criminal Record Certificate, where your name must match your passport exactly.
After a visa run, your entry date and visa change. Ask your host to declare your stay again so your registration matches your new entry.
Important: ward police addresses and responsibilities can change. Landlords and accommodation providers should check the latest information from Ho Chi Minh City Police before visiting.

Frequently asked questions
Do foreigners register their own temporary residence in Vietnam?
Usually not. The person who manages your accommodation, such as the hotel, landlord or homestay owner, declares your temporary residence to the local ward police. You give them your passport, visa or residence card and stay details.
How soon must my temporary residence be declared?
Within 12 hours of your arrival at the accommodation, or within 24 hours in remote areas.
Do I need to be registered again after a visa run?
Yes. After you leave Vietnam and come back on a new visa or entry stamp, ask your host to declare your stay again with your new entry details.
My old address says Ward 1, District 3. Which police station is it now?
Since 1 July 2025, Ho Chi Minh City no longer has districts and many wards were merged. Former Wards 1, 2, 3 and 5 of District 3 now belong to Ban Co Ward, for example. Check the latest list from Ho Chi Minh City Police or ask us.
Why do I need a stamped temporary residence confirmation?
It is often requested for a temporary residence card, a work permit and a Vietnam Criminal Record Certificate. Keep the original with the red police stamp.
